A chi-squared time-frequency discriminator for gravitational wave detection
Searches for known waveforms in gravitational wave detector data are often
done using matched filtering. When used on real instrumental data, matched
filtering often does not perform as well as might be expected, because
non-stationary and non-Gaussian detector noise produces large spurious filter
outputs (events). This paper describes a chi-squared time-frequency test which
is one way to discriminate such spurious events from the events that would be
produced by genuine signals. The method works well only for broad-band signals.
The case where the filter template does not exactly match the signal waveform
is also considered, and upper bounds are found for the expected value of

Anionic surfactant induced desorption of a cationic surfactant from mica.
The adsorption and desorption of a cationic surfactant, didodecyldimethy-
lammonium bromide, from water onto a mica surface has been investigated using neutron reflectivity. The surfactant was observed to adsorb strongly as a bilayer that was tenacious to a sustained water wash, but on the addition of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate, at its critical micelle concentration complete desorption was observed.We thank BP PLC for funding (RG8620), and specifically Stephanie Houston and Isabella Stocker for their input. Onset of experimental severe cardiac fibrosis is mediated by overexpression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2 is a recently identified homologue of ACE. There is great interest in the therapeutic benefit for ACE2 overexpression in the heart. However, the role of ACE2 in the regulation of cardiac structure and function, as well as maintenance of systemic blood pressure, remains poorly understood. In cell culture, ACE2 overexpression led to markedly increased myocyte volume, assessed in primary rabbit myocytes. To assess ACE2 function in vivo, we used a recombinant adeno-associated virus 6 delivery system to provide 11-week overexpression of ACE2 in the myocardium of stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats. ACE2, as well as the ACE inhibitor enalapril, significantly reduced systolic blood pressure. However, in the heart, ACE2 overexpression resulted in cardiac fibrosis, as assessed by histological analysis with concomitant deficits in ejection fraction and fractional shortening measured by echocardiography. Furthermore, global gene expression profiling demonstrated the activation of profibrotic pathways in the heart mediated by ACE2 gene delivery. This study demonstrates that sustained overexpression of ACE2 in the heart in vivo leads to the onset of severe fibrosis
Optimizing infrastructure placement in wireless mesh networks using NSGA-II
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) provide a flexible
and low-cost technology to efficiently deliver broadband services
to communities. In a WMN, a mesh router is deployed at each
house, which acts both as a local access point and a relay to
other nearby houses. Since mesh routers typically consist of offthe-shelf
equipment, the major cost of the network is in the
placement and management of Internet Transit Access Points
(ITAP) which act as the connection to the internet. In designing
a WMN, the aim is to minimize the number of ITAPs required
whilst maximizing the traffic that could be served to each house.
A multi-objective optimization algorithm is investigated to solve
the WMN infrastructure placement problem, using crossover
and mutation operators. A simulation based analysis is used to
demonstrate the benefit of the proposed approach

An unfolding signifier: London's Baltic Exchange in Tallinn
In the summer of 2007 an unusual cargo arrived at Muuga and Paldiski harbors outside Tallinn. It consisted of nearly 50 containers holding over 1,000 tons of building material ranging from marble columns, staircases and fireplaces, to sculpted allegorical figures, wooden paneling and old-fashioned telephone booths. They were once part of the Baltic Exchange in the City of London. Soon they will become facets of the landscape of Tallinn. The following article charts this remarkable story and deploys this fragmented monument to analyze three issues relating to the Estonian capital: the relocation of the âBronze Soldierâ, the demolition of the Sakala Culture Center, and Tallinnâs future role as European Cultural Capital in 2011
Endemicity of Zoonotic Diseases in Pigs and Humans in Lowland and Upland Lao PDR: Identification of Socio-cultural Risk Factors
In Lao People's Democratic Republic pigs are kept in close contact with families. Human risk of infection with pig zoonoses arises from direct contact and consumption of unsafe pig products. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Luang Prabang (north) and Savannakhet (central-south) Provinces. A total of 59 villages, 895 humans and 647 pigs were sampled and serologically tested for zoonotic pathogens including: hepatitis E virus (HEV), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and Trichinella spiralis; In addition, human sera were tested for Taenia spp. and cysticercosis. Seroprevalence of zoonotic pathogens in humans was high for HEV (Luang Prabang: 48.6%, Savannakhet: 77.7%) and T. spiralis (Luang Prabang: 59.0%, Savannakhet: 40.5%), and lower for JEV (around 5%), Taenia spp. (around 3%) and cysticercosis (Luang Prabang: 6.1, Savannakhet 1.5%). Multiple correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering of principal components was performed on descriptive data of human hygiene practices, contact with pigs and consumption of pork products. Three clusters were identified: Cluster 1 had low pig contact and good hygiene practices, but had higher risk of T. spiralis. Most people in cluster 2 were involved in pig slaughter (83.7%), handled raw meat or offal (99.4%) and consumed raw pigs' blood (76.4%). Compared to cluster 1, cluster 2 had increased odds of testing seropositive for HEV and JEV. Cluster 3 had the lowest sanitation access and had the highest risk of HEV, cysticercosis and Taenia spp. Farmers which kept their pigs tethered (as opposed to penned) and disposed of manure in water sources had 0.85 (95% CI: 0.18 to 0.91) and 2.39 (95% CI: 1.07 to 5.34) times the odds of having pigs test seropositive for HEV, respectively. The results have been used to identify entry-points for intervention and management strategies to reduce disease exposure in humans and pigs, informing control activities in a cysticercosis hyper-endemic village
